History

Petro Star was formed in 1984 to fill a unique role in Alaska’s petroleum market. While other Alaska refineries were processing a wide variety of petroleum products, Petro Star’s founders recognized the need for a refinery that would process only mid-end distillates such as heating oil, diesel and aviation fuels for homes and businesses in Alaska.

Efficiency Through Integration

Moving quickly to meet a market need, Petro Star built its refinery in the North Pole within a matter of months. This location placed the company next to the commercial and transportation hub of Fairbanks, and alongside the trans-Alaska pipeline, a direct source of crude oil. Petro Star soon acquired fuel distribution companies and began to market its products throughout Interior Alaska and the Arctic Slope/Prudhoe Bay region.

Through the years, growth has been driven by vertical integration. In 1993, Petro Star constructed the Valdez Refinery. Today the refinery processes 60,000-bbl/day of Alaska North Slope crude oil. The Valdez refinery produces ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) #2, ULSD Arctic Grade #1, military and commercial grade jet fuel, JP5, heating oil, and marine diesel.

Petro Star’s success is largely driven by its ability to serve a targeted market with an extremely efficient operation. In addition to its two refineries, the following brands make up the Petro Star family:

North Pacific Fuel
Fuel distribution and service company with facilities in Kodiak, Dutch Harbor, and Valdez, with an office in Seattle.

Sourdough Fuel
Fuel distribution and service company with locations in Fairbanks and North Pole.

Petro Star Lubricants
A bulk lube repackaging and service company with facilities in Fairbanks and Anchorage.

Alaska Owned

Today, with over 35 years of experience serving Alaska’s unique fuel needs, Petro Star has evolved into a successful team of integrated companies. We are the only Alaska-owned refining and fuel marketing operation in the state.

Petro Star is a wholly owned subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC). ASRC, along with its family of companies, is the largest Alaska-owned and operated company, employing over 15,000 people worldwide.
