Petro Star built their first refinery in a matter of months and strategically positioned it along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline at North Pole. Here PSI could obtain crude oil directly from the pipeline and still enjoy all the commercial and transportation advantages available in Fairbanks.
PSI soon acquired fuel distribution companies, including Sourdough Fuel in 1986, and began to distribute its products throughout Interior Alaska and the Arctic Slope, including Prudhoe Bay.

Despite the oil bust, the Exxon Valdez spill and other setbacks in the industry, Petro Star prevailed. It was quickly recognized as a success for its ability to serve a targeted market segment with efficiency, expertise and outstanding customer service.
In 1991, Petro Star expanded into the lubricants market with the purchase of Alaska Lube and Fuel, now known as Petro Star Lubricants. Also that year, plans for a refinery in Valdez got underway. By 1993, Petro Star Valdez Refinery began continuous operations. In 1994, with continuous and stable operations, Petro Star began servicing military and commercial aviation clients in Anchorage - now the refinery's largest business sector. A year later the company acquired Valdez Petroleum Terminal.
